You shall not commit adultery. - Exodus 20:14.
Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge. - Hebrews 13:4.
Rihanna has a song entitled "Unfaithful”, which describes to some extent - the pain of adultery. She compares her adultery in the song, to that of a murderer. She says that each time she commits adultery, she kills a little more of her husband’s life. Here are some of the words:
And I know that he knows I'm unfaithful
and it kills him inside
To know that I am happy with some other guy
I can see him dying
I don't want to do this anymore,
I don't want to be the reason why
Every time I walk out the door, I see him die a little more
I don't want to hurt him anymore
I don't want to take away his life
I don't want to be,
The song is powerful and blunt, in labeling adultery for what it is - it is murder (Romans 6:23a). Adultery is an evil, terrible, sinful act. Adultery is an act of destruction. The writer of Proverbs captures the horrific nature of adultery as well when he says, "My son, pay attention to my wisdom; lend your ear to my understanding, that you may preserve discretion, and your lips may keep knowledge. For the lips of an immoral woman drip honey, and her mouth is smoother than oil; but in the end, she is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword. Her feet go down to death, her steps lay hold of hell (Proverbs 5:1-5).”
Christian leaders are to some extent, reluctant to take on the issue of adultery, because of the woman caught in adultery in chapter eight of the Gospel of John. Jesus says to those wanting to execute by stoning the woman caught in adultery, "He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first (John 8:7b).” We can ask the same today of our own lives, and there is no one that is without sin, that has lived a perfect life (Romans 3:23). However, that does not make adultery right, and Jesus addresses this when He says to the woman, "…go and sin no more (John 11c).”
Sexual sins, whether committed by man or woman, are spiritually horrific, and cause much damage to the lives of all involved. If you are involved in sexual activity outside of marriage, I encourage you to repent, to turn away from it; before any more damage is done. You do not have to be a murderer, an adulterer - you can change through the power of the Lord. Ask the Lord to forgive you, and begin a new walk with Him in faithful obedience.
"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).”
"For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is His mercy toward those who fear Him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us (Psalm 103:11-12).”
